Ad copy refers to the printed text or spoken words in an advertisement. In the past, I’ve seen people recommending each other books on copywriting. Well, to be frank , they’re no good. So how do you go about making a killer ad copy? One way could be to pick up a line or steal the words from somewhere. But that’s not what copywriting is all about. The biggest mistake done by copywriters is that they take a successful product’s ad and change the headline or rephrase the paragraphs according to their product. For those who are into making too many mistakes, must read the following:
Answer the following questions before you make your ad copy:-
-
Clarify the objective of your ad: What do you want your ad to do for you? To generate enquiries, to make a direct sale, etc.
-
Small description of the product/service: What is the product all about? What are the uses and features? What it does? How it works? Finish it off in a small paragraph.
-
Define the target audience: Who is ad going to be addressed to? What hopes and expectations does the audience have? What might be a strong ground for objection of the product?
-
Set the price: How much should it be priced at? Justify the costs.
-
Include special offers: The key to instant attention is including special offers like premiums, money back guarantees, limited period offers etc.
-
What are the benefits? Personal and professional
-
Who are your competitors? Compare the advantages, prices, terms of the competitors
-
What is the deadline of the project?
-
What all media can be used for selling? Define the best medium to reach the consumers. Whatever attracts your customers the fastest and the easiest is the best option.
The above written points must have given you a fair idea about what you need to know while writing an ad copy. But there has to be something more to catch the fishes from the pond right?
Here’s how you can get a head start when you sit down to make an ad copy:
- Set the goal, NOW!! : One of the most important aspects of ad copies is to define the message of your ad. The message has to hit the consumers or else it’s all a waste. Everything you do should support the goal in some way or the other.
- Start with a sequel : Understand your product/ service well. Once you know what its all about, you can start going through different ads that are similar to your product. But DO NOT COPY. What you can do instead of copying is that you can start off with an idea from where the product’s ad ends. Have a sequel to that ad.
- Observe well, execute better : You don’t have to rack your brains too much to get an idea. The idea can hit you in a park, at the food table or even when you’re in the shower. Instead of thinking for hours and hours on the same table, start observing.
- Simplify everything : Make sure you are not indulging in heavy and long sentences. Keep the message clear and concise. The consumers are not interested in your company, your product or your education. They want their self interest first. This is helpful especially when e-marketing is involved and your profits are just a click away. Do not talk about yourself too much. Even though advertising is mass communication, it should be able to address the audience individually.
- Give them the best : Whoever said that the product has to be the best for it to sell, was obviously a newbie in the world of marketing. Offer your customers the best deal. Give them what they want in a manner, that they feel that it is in their best interests. Push your customers to a position that they are able to take a decision without any hesitation. The better the deal, the stronger will be the response.
- Not just attention : Try not to grab just attention by the way of business. Make your ads in way that it opens the gates to making sales. Try and capture emotion, not logic, since it works better that ways.
These small tips can help you create a killer ad copy. Pick up any successful ad copy and you are sure to find out how these things are utilized. The first step is always difficult, so have the patience and start learning. Your experience will be richer by the end of a few attempts with startling results. Further tips and suggestions are more than welcome.
